Waverider Risograph Print

This print design set out to surf amongst data sets in search of wave patterns.
Summer swells are renowned for bringing flatter days and calmer seas but is this what the data consistently says. day after day? or in the case of Becky’s search, minute after minute of every day for the past 12 years? that amounted to just over 100,000 numbers. a good sample to find some patterns.
The answer was a resounding yes. the predictability of waves (on average) can be pretty accurately forecasted. Becky looked at these same 100,000 numbers for a variety of locations – from an information buoy in the middle of the atlantic ocean to sheltered buoys on the east coast and the pattern is pretty much identical albeit the overall wave heights are vastly different.
This design takes that pattern of wave height by month to create its very own wave.
The amount that the wave curves at the top relates to the wave height by month. This wave starts with the start of the summer. july 1st. and slowly builds until you reach the month with the biggest waves. January.this print is based on the 196 active lighthouses across Scotland, Wales and England.
The design itself was based on a poster designed for the design museum entitled ‘learning from Japan’. that poster was a minimalist take on the infamous ‘the great wave off kanagawa’ by katsushika hokusai. the learning from Japan design reminds me of the swirling pattern of the woolmark logo and i thought it would be interesting to recreate the lines using wave data.
the japanese text across the centre is a nod to the designs that inspired it and it simply reads ‘surf’.
this design was originally set out to be a screenprint but the origins of the riso printer in Japan made using riso printing as a method the perfect choice.
Risograph is a cross between a screen print and a photocopy and uses soy based inks, which are environmentally friendly. the print has been printed in the U.K
The paper has been made by a paper mill in Yorkshire using fsc accredited pulp.
Each print is posted in packaging made from 100% paper and cardboard and is completely recyclable. every aspect of the packaging is made and printed in the U.K.
