Benson (Wally Dug) A3 Print
Benson is one of a pair of Wally Dugs, but you can take him alone as well! Pair with his friend Gordon if you like!
‘Wally Dugs’ (also known as Staffordshire Spaniels) are iconic porcelain Dog figurines representing Spaniel Dogs, often sold in pairs as decorative mantlepiece ornaments – usually intricately hand painted. Wally Dugs rose in popularity in the 19th century and became so beloved in Scotland, that they were often referred to by this local name – some believe that they became one of the most cherished symbols of Scottish domestic life. Culturally in the UK, Wally Dugs symbolised the ideals of loyalty, affection and protection – as well as social status and aspiration in the Victorian Era. In the West, particularly in the United States and Canada, these iconic Wally Dugs remain a popular favourite because of their aesthetic appeal.
Though distinctly a British creation and not direct copies of Chinese Art, Wally Dugs are tied to the broader history of cultural and technological exchanges of knowledge with China – that contribute towards the overall craftmanship of these figurines. The Chinoiserie style, which incorporated Chinese motifs into Western art, influenced various decorative items, including ceramics. Porcelain itself was often to referred to in the West as ‘China’, desired for its durability, whiteness and translucency. The popularity of Chinese porcelain and craftsmanship in Europe in particular, spurred on the Potters in the West to replicate the material – and reverse engineer their own version of hard-paste porcelain.
