The festival is now in full swing, any recommendations on what we must go and see? Barry Bulsara’s Jokes from the Fringe Limited Edition Screen Print has been a popular festival purchase this year.
The Perfect time to find out a little bit more about Barry and his popular print collection.
Hi Barry, Introduce your work to our lovely Red Door Customers and let them know what you do?
I would describe my hand pulled screen prints as graphic in style (not in content), often incorporating typography with a humorous and tongue in cheek approach. My inspiration comes from popular culture, TV & Film, childhood memories with a good measure of geekery thrown in!
What do you love most about what you do?
So many things! Having come from a graphic design background I love that I no longer have to do what the client wants and just get to make what I like. That and that I no longer have deadlines to work to!
Where Did You Study & Why?
I did my Art Foundation course in my hometown of Loughborough but couldn’t decide what I wanted to study for degree, so decided to take a year off and travel. (Ended up being three years) I finally decided to pursue Graphic design & Illustration at the Glasgow School of art, mostly because after travelling the world I realised that I had never been to Scotland! In hindsight probably not the best of reasons.
TRAINSPOTTING END OF EDITION – GRAB THE LAST FEW COPIES BEFORE IT’S GONE!!
Where do you base yourself and why?
My print studio is the spare room at home. I like the fact that it’s accessible 24/7 and that and I can turn up for work in my dressing gown!
What do you like to do when you escape work? Where’s your favourite Coffee Spot?
What I do doesn’t really feel like work (mostly) My local Bar/Cafe the Orange Tree is where I go most days. I take my laptop and prop the bar up to do my design and admin stuff. I’ve been going there for over 10 years, so I’m part of the furniture now.
What’s been your favourite piece to make so far?
Hard to say but probably my Weasley’s Wheezes print as I used a mix of hand drawn illustration with typography and it was a challenge to get the layout right but I was very pleased with the end result.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Oh so much advice! But relating to art & career I’d probably say have confidence in yourself, keep being creative and learn as much as you can but above all enjoy what you do and have fun!
Who’s your favourite artist at The Red Door and what would be your top purchase?
I love the print work of Susie Wright and her prints of the Edinburgh skyline but I would probably choose her Botanical Plants prints as I love how incredibly intricate it is.
