Edinburgh New Town Gin

£ 22.00

Edinburgh New Town Gin is one half of a diptych by David Fleck. The partner to this print is Edinburgh Old Town Whisky.
Edinburgh’s history, architecture and economy is highly influenced by The Gin Trade. By the late 1700’s there were 8 registered Gin distilleries in Edinburgh, with around 400 more believed to be operating under cover. The Gin Craze was in full swing, and its affordability made it the drink of the people, though it was usually flavoured with turpentine! The Victoria era saw a new distillation process and so the arrival of The London Gin, which is more in line with the gin we find in Edinburgh today. Gin by definition, must be flavoured with Juniper, turps is out and lovely botanical infusions are very much in (phew). More recently, Edinburgh’s New Town is home to a wide range of new Gin Bars and stills. Production of locally made, small batch gins has really taken off and Edinburgh has many locally crafted and experimental gins to offer.  Gin’s rich heritage reaches far beyond Scotland and contemporary gin crafters are inspired by fresh botanics, herbs and spices found not only across Scotland’s countryside, but also in the traditional recipes found across the world.

David Fleck has captured the spirit (ahem) of the Georgian era in his Edinburgh illustration. The high ceilings of Edinburgh’s New Town were built during the first Gin craze between 1767 and 1850, and so the architecture shares a history with gin production in Edinburgh. In this delicate illustration, David Fleck layers up Edinburgh’s Georgian architecture, Juniper Trees and then encapsulates them in a Gin Bottle.

Created by David Fleck for the “Crag & Tale” exhibition, for which we encouraged illustrators to look at Edinburgh from a different perspective.
