Today is The Queen’s Birthday, and monarch or not, we think any 90th Birthday is worth celabrating, so we’d like to wish Her Majesty a very Happy Birthday!
The above print of Queen Elizabeth II is by Edinburgh based artist, Patrizio Belcampo and is part of his study of Queens. Hand screenprinted in a limited edition of of only 30 this print demonstrates the artist’s technical skill, eye for colour, composition and fondness for re-interpreting existing traditions. Also inspired by monarchy is the above “Crash 1 – Prince Albert” which is part of a series of six limited edition screenprints by Patrizio Belcampo. Limited to only 14, this series explores a conceptual approach to composition, based upon the artist imagining post-train crash scenarios in different times of railway history.
“Crash 3 – Queen Victoria” above is inspired by Queen Victoria’s era, who reigned from 1837 to 1901. A 64 year reign which is now met by Queen Elizabeth II’s 64 years as a monarch.
Royal Portrature is, of course, steeped in tradition. The above signed and numbered work was Andy Warhol’s last print-portrait before his death in 1987 and sold in 2012 for £60,000.
What stands out about Patrizio’s work is the combination of portraits of Pop culture icons, with his heavily his reserched historical references. The above print of Mary, Queen of Scots is a firm favourite here in The Red Door Gallery, in part due to the considered Scottish context but mainy due to his skills as a master printmaker rendering his Royal Portrait series one to collect and keep.
